A lost piece of art

Never before have i lost a piece of artwork to irreversible damage. a sad day. This was its last moments before it was disposed of. We think it was temperature change or it could have had a hairline fracture concealed in the edges. At any rate, with no pressure on the glass the front pane just shattered. The pictures are poor, the piece is lying the street at this point to keep glass from going all over.

The Pinhole Camera

Apparently i never posted this. This was from a couple moths ago at a show in the U245 gallery. I turned the space into pinhole camera obscure. It was only up for a day just before Noel Night. The viewer was invited to walk throughout the space and view the world outside the gallery. Because of the nature of light, the image was projected upside down and backwards

I biked down to the Hub (bike shop near by) and asked if they would sell my bags in there store and after inspecting them, said yes.

so here are the latest:

so whats different with these bags is that i have started to put the clips on the side of the bag instead of the bottom. And on the bag above i use part of a broken rock climbing harness.

Im getting faster at making them.

this is the latest bag. started it last night and finished it this morning. There really isn't anything different about this one, expect i made it was my two new sewing machines. I got a 60 style WHITE industrial sewing machine and a Toyota Serger (love this thing)

Bags 3 and 4

So this bag was made via request of my good friend Ryan. The idea was to mimic Seal Line's style of the water proof bag with the roll top and clip. The pattern was easy to change to accommodate the idea, but i did run into a couple of issues. I have been putting each bag i make through some stress test to ensure that they will hold up. The material i used to make this bag was weaker. I used an older pull down window blind, and after a couple days of use the vinyl started to crack and peal. The second issue i was having is that where you roll the top it was not stiff enough. I need to find some plastic to stick into it to keep it from buckling. As far as it being waterproof im not to sure, I never got to use it in the rain. I think the next one i make ill just where in the shower and see if its still dry on the inside. I might need to get some kind of sealant for the seams. so we'll see.

This is the latest bag. I had to take apart the pink one i made last week for the buckles and what not. I dont have a whole lot of those right now. Once i get the pattern down and increase my craftsmanship ill probable buy some in bulk so i can just punch out the bags and sell them. I like this one a lot, its bigger than the original pattern i was using so i have room for my camelbak Unbottle and for my sketchbooks, pencils, books and what ever else i want to throw in there. I have some broken rock climbing harnesses with 20 pound loops on them that i want to attach to the bottom for clipping things to when i ride my bike. The only think i did wrong with this bag was originally i was going to attach some flaps that cover the top flap when its clipped down. I was trying experiment with other waterproofing methods. Unfortunately when i stitched the sides up i forgot to put them in, so it will have to wait till the next one.

So this is the first bag i made using the method shown in this make magazine post. It turned out well, took me about an hour to get the temperature right on the iron. The bag lasted me about 10 hours before i put to much stress on the strap and it ripped. I has sewed the strap on the wrong part of the bag causing an awkward and week stress point.

The bag is made completely out of trash bags melted together using an iron. It feels like a tarp.

So the day after i wanted to try making another out of vinyl and went out dumpster diving to try to find some. two kinkos, one graphics store and several hours later i was no closer to having any vinyl. Then it hit me, Glenn, a friend of mine has a ton of huge vinyl movie posters in his room he got from someone who worked at a theater. So i head over to AMC livonia 20, the closest movie theater around where i was at. Unfortunately they use a compactor so no luck there. But while i was about to drive off i decided it might be worth it to go in and ask. SO the movie ticket collector directed me to a manager. I gave them the "Im an artist" shpeal and they (there was more than one manager) ate it right up. less then 5 minutes later i had a 5' x 6' vinyl speed racer movie poster. The moment i got back I made this:

thanks to several bags i had gotten from camping store dumpsters and other assorted material i had on me it was a hit. I added a camelback water container equipped with several places to be attached to another bag to the inside with clips as to have it not fall out if the bag were to open while on my bike or something.

I was borrowing a sewing machine from Pennie (who is the resident life coordinator at CCS) and i broke 3 of her needles making this bag. One of the things on my list to get after im done with this camp job is a good sewing machine (and also some new sewing needles for Pennie)
